The word “Ayurveda” means the science of life. According to ancient Sanskrit language, the real essence of life includes: Body, senses, mind and soul. Within this life, nature offers us air, fire, water and earth embedded in space, which is found within the heart of every individual. Our mind can be compared to space and wind which moves around the cellular structure of our entire nervous system itself. This is called Vata Dosha which is responsible for everything that moves within the body. The element of earth is expressed as the physical body in the form of nails, hair, bones and muscles. The senses have a direct relationship with nature through the vehicle of sound, sight, smell, taste, and touch . We can smell the earth, taste that which is made up of water, see and perceive things through the gift of fire, hear from the sound waves which are filtered through space and touch through the element of air. The eyes are the fire of the soul and it is said that the soul is seen through the illuminating light of the eyes. Thus, all that is outside in terms of nature is inside of this very sacred self. Through the unity of elements we find the universe lives inside of us and our hearts are the center of the universe. Contained within our heart is the vastness of space and love. The great sage: Shri Ramana Maharshi says: “The entire universe is in the body and the whole body is in the Heart. Hence the universe is contained within the Heart. The Heart is to the body what the sun is to the world. Just as the sun gives light to the moon, the Heart gives light to the mind”

The word for oil in Sanskrit is called: “Sneha” translated as: loving, nurturing and spreading. Deep within our core souls, we are in need of being saturated with warm herbal medicated oil! Why? Because some signs of our imbalance are expressed through an increase Vata Dosha or ether and air element..These biological humours called doshas were born from Ayurveda an ancient science from India. Vata is dry, light, and quick in nature, easily irregular and can cause nervousness to increase. Just as a wind storm dries things quickly, so the mind feels this effect. In contrary, oil creates the opposite: It is moist, heavy, and stable. These qualities allow us to slow down, with an ability to feel calm, and relaxed within our nervous system opening to the possibilities of spaciousness and love. Expansive as the sky.

This expression of love through the vehicle of oil has been used in India for thousands of years. For example; it is tradition to massage a new born baby & mother every day with warm sesame oil as it best nourishes the skin, contains iron, calcium, phosphorus and commonly applied to the scalp, called “food for the brain”. The healing qualities: sweet, bitter, and astringent assist in cleansing and rejuvinating the nervous system.

As our bodies need oil, so our beloved planet Mother Earth needs oil to sustain and nourish her, for us to be nourished. We pray the oil within our bodies, and soil will continue to feed the elements and all living beings without exception. As we continue to function as precious fluid beings, may we all rest in ease due to this unctuous ground we walk on and may we continue to flourish in lavishing barrels of oil inside and out!

Ayurveda is the oldest healing science in the world. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means Science of Life, or Science of Longevity. Long ago, enlightened beings called Rishis came to realize that everything which exists in nature as ether, air, fire, water, & earth also exists inside of us. From these five great elements were born three doshas, Vata (ether & air), Pitta (fire & water), and Kapha (water & earth).

Existing in these doshas of the body are gunas or qualities such as hot, cold, subtle, heavy, etc. A person with a Kapha body, cool in nature may benefit from heating vigorous yoga, but for a Pitta person, practicing the same yoga could be harmful. Pitta is hot in nature due to its various oily, hot qualities. Its function is transformation, through digestion, absorption, & assimilation. Heating yoga postures & long headstands could increase heat to the head, thereby increasing Pitta, causing an imbalance. Cooling postures, like forward bends would benefit a Pitta person whereby heating & vigorous postures would benefit a Kapha person.

Vata holds the subtle qualities of ether (space) and air. The mind is frequently moving like the wind and tends towards nervous conditions. Slow, steady restorative yoga with pranayama is grounding and beneficial for calming a busy Vata mind, therefore bringing all doshas back into balance. Due to the increasing winds here on the Islands, Vata is constantly being challenged. By regulating our breath through mindful awareness, the mind brings all its gunas back into balance.

Through this attention of breath, we are surrounded by a beautiful gift of life which nourishes us, thus bringing us back into alignment with the entire universe and her gifts.
